prefix, from Latin, used with the meaning ‘again’, ‘back’

‘RE:’ means acknowledging the existed or existing.

‘RE:’ is dealing with the past or present to address the future.

‘RE:’ is aware of the circular nature of reality and interconnection of things.

‘RE:’ establishes a new and different kind of order or value.

‘RE:’ opposes to ignorance.

RE:

THERE IS NO AESTHETICS

WITHOUT ETHICS.

Architects should, naturally, put an emphasis on the socially, economically and environmentally sensitive attitude and its priority in design. However, we must acknowledge that each time and space had their own understanding of these terms - we aim to examine ours.

WE DON’T BELIEVE IN TRASH.

We are digging into new dimensions of usefulness in order to find value, meaning and potential in the endless amounts of waste, in all its forms: wasted material, abandoned spaces, wasted time. Architects need to reconsider their role and attitude in this hyperproduced reality - to reshape themselves into those who can embrace the existing and face the challenge of achieving continuities. The world needs to build upon itself, from its own waste, its own mistakes, its lessons and its own abandoned potential, rather than to constantly produce the new. It needs to recreate. RE is born here.

WHERE IS THE LINE

BETWEEN NEEDS AND

LUXURIES?

We are, firstly, humans. Then, we are architects or else. Therefore, we are stepping from the professional domain back into the personal sphere, asking ourselves where we draw the line between what we need and what is a luxury. Do we know even, what they are? When should we renounce and when should we struggle for more?

Location: Rijeka

RE:EASA will take place in Rijeka. It is the main port city and the third largest city in Croatia. It stretches between a river and the sea, between hills and the shore. Its turbulent past, unique location and a sudden rise of industry have shaped it into a city of contradictions and diversity.

The city is defined not only by seafaring and industry, but also by a lively subcultural scene. Having given birth to the first punk and rock scene in this part of Europe, Rijeka has been a prominent site for alternative culture since the fifties. The city is a collage of many landscapes, ancient and new settlements, different nations, subcultures and religions. However, Rijeka’s sudden industrial bloom was followed by a slow decay and financial collapse, leaving behind an industrial harbour complex that divides the city and separates it from the sea. Our intention is to REpurpose and REvive these spaces. The area around the river’s delta in the very centre of the city, with its abandoned complexes and factories will be the location where most of the lectures, parties and communal life of RE:EASA will be taking place.

Project

RE:EASA is organized by a small team of Croatian architecture students of Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb. They have all participated in previous EASA assemblies and are involved members of the EASA's community as well as active on the Croatian architectural scene.

On the EASA's supporting conference INCM Madrid 2016* in October last year, RE:EASA with its location in Rijeka was chosen as the EASA's 2018 project, between the 5 strong proposals . The assembly will take place in the summer 2018, lasting for 2 weeks. The program will include the educational part with lectures and workshops, as well as free program with excursions and musical program. The project also includes events in the period before the assembly: public discussions and workshops with the citizens of Rijeka, informative lectures, EASA's pre-meeting for potential tutors (ITM 2018*) as well as the events after the assembly: exhibitions, lectures, final report and a publication on topic, with all the outcomes of the project.

*INCM – Intermediate National Contacts Meeting

* ITM – International Tutors Meeting

re:easa team is cooperating with professionals, important institutions and citizens of Rijeka on the organisation of the event and its daily program. We hope that we will, with your help, be closer to the realisation of a successful easa assembly and all its accompanying events.

ITM – International Tutors Meeting

18 - 22 october 2017

ITM for re:easa was held in October of 2017 in Rijeka. Around a hundred international students interested in preparing and leading workshops for easa 2018 participated in the meeting. It was primarily concerned with scouting the sites as well as the lectures with experts who presented different topics and locations relevant to the conference. Discussions and workshops were held as well, during which the participants familiarized themselves with and defined problems of the contexts of the site. The aim of the meeting was to define workshop assignments as well as to gather information for the project’s future development. The meeting included an entertainment programme as well.

itm is the most important preparatory easa event. It is organised to introduce potential workshop tutors to the subject and program of the upcoming easa.
